Do Not Despair; The Lord is At WorkWritten by Jeron Parkins
1 Kings 19:1-4 Elijah Flees Jezebel: “Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”
Elijah had lost hope. He felt like his enemies were in charge and there was no way forward. He was probably exhausted and had lost perspective. His mood was dark. He didn’t see what God saw. He didn’t see the big picture, nor grasp the plans of the Lord. There are times in life when we despair. We wonder if we will ever break free of an addiction, or if a relationship will ever get better. We get burned out and want to give up. It’s terribly depressing to feel things are hopeless. No doubt some will despair over the outcome of the elections, but as Christians we know who rules this world. Elijah forgot whose world this is and that God is always at work even when we can’t see it.
1 Kings 19:9-18 The Lord speaks to Elijah at the Mountain of God: “There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
Elijah thought he was alone. He was He wasn’t. God kept 7,000 faithful to himself in spite of the fact that the nation had fallen into great depravity and idolatry. Elijah thought the darkness was winning, but God was already at work implementing a plan to remove the wicked king and his supporters. It’s so easy to forget that Jesus is at work in our world. Jesus is working all around us. When Communism took over China in the early 1950’s, and the government kicked out western missionaries, many fell into despair, believing the Church would be destroyed in China. They forgot that the Communist ideology was no match for the Spirit of God. The believers in China prayed fervently for their nation and they began to take seriously the call to evangelism. Today there are probably more born again believers in China than there are in the United States. By 2030 there will be more Christians in “Atheistic China” than any country in the world.
Jude 1:17-21: “But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.” Do not despair! The Lord is at work internationally, but also in our church, and in your life. Look to the Lord in faith and patiently wait for his plan to come about. Do not despair, the Lord is at work.
CELEBRATING WHAT GOD IS DOING
It’s been a year since we began the Bringing Life Project and the CE and Ministry Building is on schedule and under budget! Not only that but we’ve met our year one fundraising goal – Great Job, Church! We’ve got a lot to celebrate as we anticipate what God is going to do through us over the coming decades. This new building is going to be a tool that will serve and bless thousands of people through it’s lifespan. Part of this weekend of worship is about acknowledging the Lord and remembering that this is His work, not ours. To Him be the glory, for he has provided and will provide all that is accomplished. Over the summer many folks were able to write Bible verses or prayers on the concrete as we dedicated the project to the Lord. This Saturday and Sunday we are going to have the opportunity to write Bible verses or prayers on the steel girders. As we’ve put God’s Word on the foundations, let’s put it upon the pillars. On Saturday night come early (anytime between 5-6 pm, markers will be available). Sunday morning you can step into the building site before, between or after services. I’d suggest taking the time to write out prayers before you come so that what you put on the iron is clear and to the point.

The leaders of the youth have families of their own and can relate to the youth's life styles and questions. Youth Leaders, Cliff & Cari Kincannon 505-350-8748, help in this always challenging ministry as our youth face the ever present peer pressures in the schools and the extra-curricular activities around the community.
WEDNESDAYS IN THE WORD
Join me (Pastor Jeron) from 6:30 till 8:00 on Wednesday nights in the Fellowship Hall. Our Fall class is a biblical exploration and questioning of what faithfulness to Jesus looks like in the realm of politics. This is not a class to attend in order to “vent” or “slam the other political party,” but rather a place for people who want to honor Jesus as Lord to explore what it means to serve him in the realm of civic engagement and politics. We got started last night by watching the Vice-Presidential Debate and we’ll spend some time on Oct 14 discussing 2020 Democratic and Republican party platforms with the goal of getting to the values and principles that underlay political positions and stances. The Class will be recorded (audio) and you can access it through our church website www.livingwateralamosa.org
MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS meets first and third Wednesdays from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
MOPS BIBLE STUDY meets every second, fourth and fifth Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall (in the main building). Contact Shirley Bervig 719-480-1683 with questions.

SUNDAY CHILDREN’S MINISTRY at 10:45 a.m.
Parents, when you come to the 10:45 service, arrive a bit early to check in your kids. For check in, there are three kiosks in the main building (outer lobby, inner lobby and by west double doors) that you can use (we will seek to clean these often, but if you prefer a physical sign in on paper, there will be a clipboard on the lobby table). If your kids haven’t participated in our children’s ministry before, allow a bit more time to get registered – or simply register your kids right now through this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeKcvQV-Vi0u2bSAW_kcmCswbRnYR0FjOZvW08pQL7FYEIhDg/viewform?usp=sf_link
