How will you use your 168 hours this Fall?

Where has the summer gone? With the Stampede knocking at the door, with public schools calling on parents to register their kids, and the fair happening soon, it seems that we’ll be making a turn towards the Fall soon. Which means decision time is at hand. We all get 168 hours a week.  Nobody gets more, nobody gets less. How are you going to use your hours?  Have you ever thought about your week as a series of activities where you state your values and priorities by what you do? To cut to the chase, will God be a priority this Fall? Will God’s worship be an actual value? Will serving God be something that is a priority? Now is the time when there are all kinds of possible commitments starting to be pitched at you (including invitations from the church!). Will God’s worship be accomplished by saying yes to what is being offered? Will God be lifted up in your family by taking on that commitment or will that new commitment keep you and your family away from God? Theoretically everything we do can be done “unto the Lord” but as Americans many of us aren’t very intentional about making our work or our sports or our hunting for the Lord’s glory. So practically speaking, it’s very helpful to set aside hours that are specifically devoted to God. Joining clubs, sports, activities, boards, home improvement projects, taking more hours at work, etc. can all be positive and be good things, but by saying yes to participating in them, what are you saying no to? What are you giving up?  By saying yes to a new commitment are you still able to say “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?”  Here’s a tough question but needs to be asked: If Jesus and the things that matter to him are always on the bottom of the list, if Jesus and his mission never get a focus in our life, do we truly value Jesus and his calling? I’m praying for you as you enter into this next season of decision making regarding your time. You can’t do it all, I can’t do it all. Something is going to be cut from your schedule and for some people the Lord and his worship is what goes.  However, may the Lord Jesus know by your commitments and your use of our time, that you value him above all things. Please sit down before too long and determine what is the Lord’s and what part of your schedule is going to be devoted to him. Perhaps start by reviewing last year. What had you overwhelmed?  Did you get enough sleep?  Did your family get enough time with you?  Were things like Community Groups, Worship Services, Personal Devotions part of your life, or did they always get pushed aside?  Did you use your Spiritual Gift(s) in a meaningful way? Did you serve the Lord at all last year?  Asking these kinds of questions allow us to determine what is most valuable and how best to use the 168 hours per week we have been given. May everyone know by our commitments what we value the most.

Here’s what’s happening at Living Water in the near future:

SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

Earlier this summer both Becky McGee (Lily Pad Director) and Chris Ann Zook (Kidsplash Director) decided the timing was right to step away from their children’s ministry director roles. They both served faithfully for many years and will be missed! So what’s the plan?  What’s next for our Sunday morning children’s ministry at Living Water?  Here’s what’s happening:

-      Starting in August we’ll be taking our customary end of summer break. We won’t be offering children’s ministry on Sunday mornings August 4,11, 18, and 25, nor will we offer it on September 1st (Labor Day weekend). This is a great opportunity for the family to meet the Lord together in worship.

-      Pastor Bo will serve as our interim Director of Children’s Ministry on Sunday mornings. If you remember last year we gave him the role as Director of Discipleship, so this is a perfect fit for Bo to get involved in working with such things as curriculum selection, volunteer recruitment, volunteer training and communication with parents.

-      Fall Children’s Ministry Launch will continue as planned on Sunday, September 8 during the 10:45 service.

-      What will be different this Fall is that we are going with a new structure which I think all of us pastors are pretty excited about. Instead of the “Children’s Church” model that we’ve had for more than a decade we are going to simplify and focus on the teaching and application of God’s Word. Basically we’re going to have the kids engaged in a large group lesson and then break up into age-appropriate small groups to reinforce the lesson and make application.

-      What’s also going to be different is that we are going to release the kids to Children’s Ministry mid-service. As we talked about some of our values we realized that many kids never get to see their parents singing to the Lord or taking communion or participating in the offering. So what this is going to entail is a new order of worship this Fall where we have a regular set point before the sermon where kids (and parents) know that it’s time to go to the Children’s program (We are still looking for an appropriate name).  What we anticipate is that the kids will spend about 30 minutes worshiping with their parents in the sanctuary (a bit longer on Communion Sundays) and have about 40-45 minutes learning a biblical lesson directed towards them, on their level.

-      As part of this new structure we’re going to invest in several new “check-in” kiosks where it will be easy for parents to check in kids before the service and print out security labels to pick children up after the service.  We’ll also make the check-in of kids easy through our church app.  While we expect that this system will work well, we are also going to have a back-up system on hand in case our technology isn’t available.

-      Please pray about serving the children this Fall!  Serving children so that they know God and walk with God is a worthy investment. Pastor Bo would be happy to have you as part of the Sunday Morning Children’s Ministry Team. Contact him at 719-529-1204 for information or to ask questions.

Perspective

Perhaps brothers and sisters you need to look at this life differently than you currently are?  In our troubles and adversities (or even in our victories) we can easily lose perspective on the bigger picture. If you are suffering today or overwhelmed by the weight of this world or feel defeated because of sin, remember that God has written us into a bigger story!  The chapter that you are experiencing today isn’t the end of the book.  Some “perspective” scriptures that remind us of the amazing future which is ours in Christ:

“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).

“Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world… do you not know that we are to judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3).

“Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2nd Timothy 4:8).

“Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” (1 Peter 5:10).

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2nd Corinthians 4:16-18).

Here’s some of what’s happening in the weeks ahead at Living Water…

COMMUNITY GROUP LEADERS TRAINING Tonight

Pastor Bo is leading another training tonight for the Fall launch of Community Groups. Join the team at 6:30 tonight in the Fellowship Hall. One of the neat ways you can serve your church family and participate in the making of disciples is through hosting or leading a Community Group in your home. Contact Pastor Bo if you would like to talk more about serving in this way (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Faithful

God gave me a great reminder this week that he is at work and that he is to be trusted.  Some of you know that Elizabeth and I are selling our house out in the country and are seeking to move into Alamosa.  If you know Alamosa right now, you know that housing is in short supply.  So while we are happy that our house has a contract (if all goes well we’ll close on July 17) I have also been a bit nervous because of the shortage of availability of places to rent.  If you are connected to our church’s Facebook group you saw that I put out a request asking that if anyone knew of someone who had a house that was opening up, that we were interested. What I didn’t know, was that before I had even posted the request, someone had hours beforehand called the church and left a message asking me to get ahold of them – because they have a house that is now going to be vacant and they wanted to know if we had found anything yet.  Wow!  Didn’t see that one coming!  God answered my request before I even asked it!  And it came about because God has answered some prayers on the homeowner’s end of things which they were fervently praying about.  It certainly has been a great reminder that God is active in his providences, and that I need to trust him with my days.

Our church is going through some really exciting times right now, but we are also entering into a great amount of change (see all the updates below).  Guess what?  We need to trust him with our days!  We need to trust him to lead our church (HIS church)!  Let us remember in these days of change that God is faithful, and that he is at work, even when he hasn’t told us the timetable or revealed his plan.  Let us pray much about the decisions we have to make!  “What do you want us to do Lord?  Our eyes are on you!” Let us surrender ourselves to his perfect plan and his perfect timing and be at peace about the days ahead.  It’s a great time to

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

BAPTISMS this Sunday

If you’ve been planning to get baptized our next Baptism Sunday is this Sunday, June 23. The river is too high still so we’ll have baptisms in the church. Please contact Pastor Jeron (before Friday) if you want to talk about getting baptized (589-6351 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

EAGLE LAKE CAMP UPDATE

There are 39 registered and 10 pending so that puts us right at about 50 kids for our July 31-Aug 2 Day Camp. This is good but let’s go to work to sign more kids up!  There are so many children in our valley who haven’t heard the gospel!  Please let parents know about the camp and that they can register at www.eaglelakecamps.com/livingwater. If you would like to host some counselors this year we have 12 more people needing a host home. We are looking for some 13-18 year olds to serve as “crew campers” during the week.  Additionally if you would like to support a camper with scholarship money it is always welcomed!  Contact Jordan Curtis at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have questions or want to volunteer or help in any way.  Thank you!

COLLEGE MINISTRY UPDATE

I’m very happy to announce that Living Water will be supporting a new College Ministry this Fall. “ANCHORED” will be led by Forrest and Hope McCleary and Malcom and Leah Hillewaerts. They are moving here as missionaries specifically to reach students, staff and faculty!  Sometime in early August I’ll have them share during the worship services how we as a church can support them and on August 25th we’ll be hosting our first college meal of the Fall. Please be in prayer for the McClearys and the Hillewaerts and for the ASU and TSJC campuses.  Please welcome them into our church family!  This email address is being protected from spambots. NURSERY UPDATE

Over the years I’ve been so grateful for the folks who have led our nursery. Recently Anna Gearhart let us know it was time for her to step away. We’re going to have a time of saying thanks for her ministry on July 28th.  Having experienced and skilled leaders step away is always hard, but God continues to provide folks to take the baton. I’m happy to announce that our Nursery is in trusted hands. Melissa Shipp has agreed to be our new Nursery Director. She’s served in the nursery for many years and she is very excited about the opportunity to continue running our nursery at a high level. Harley Kincannon is going to be joining her in a leadership role as our Assistant Nursery Director. Church, let’s support these ladies, as our nursery is in high demand! If you’ve wanted to serve in the nursery, now is the time to volunteer!

PRAISE TEAM UPDATE

We’ve been blessed to have a bunch of folks step up and serve on the Praise Team in June, which has been an answer to prayer. John Gutierrez has done a great job helping our team as we lost Pastor Collin at the end of May (he took a lead pastor role at a church in Roswell, NM).  This Sunday some of the “new” folks to our church family will lead - Peter and Amanda Strutton have lived in Alamosa for about 9 months and have recently connected with the Praise Team.  On July 30th we go “old school” with Greg Bervig leading the team (will we hear a bluegrass sound?). Greg and Cindy led worship for several years at our Main Street building.  In the near future we are going to start a search for a new Praise Team director; I’m going to begin working on a job description soon.  Please pray for God to lead the right person to us as it takes a special person to be a full time Worship Leader!

BUILDING UPDATE

If you haven’t heard, our congregation has decided to move forward on the expanding our facilities through the construction of a Christian Education Community Building. Through the summer there will be a lot of planning and details lined up and we’ll be giving you regular communication.  In June and July Pastor Greg and the Facility and Finance Team will be filing loan application documents and making sure we are ready to go on that side of things. Starting in the August/September time frame we’ll launch a Building Fund Campaign. Our current timeline is to see groundbreaking by summer of 2020.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

Parents, our Children’s Ministry is also in a time of change. If you read the Update email from last week you know that Becky McGee and ChrisAnn Zook are making the decision this summer to step away from leading Lily Pad and Kidsplash (they will serve through the end of July). This is going to be challenging as they’ve been serving our children for a long time, but we’re going to have a time of saying thanks for their ministries on July 28th.  Calendar wise, there won’t be Children’s Ministry Sunday, July 7th nor will we be offering Children’s Ministry for Sundays in August. Pastor Bo (Discipleship Director), Pastor Greg and I had a good planning session this week and are excited about what God is doing in our midst and about the opportunities ahead. While it’s hard to lose the services of leaders like Becky and ChrisAnn, it’s a great time to come to God in prayer and ask him what’s next and how we can best serve children and families.

HYMN SING June 30

We are excited that our monthly Hymn Sing is back on track with lots of musicians participating!  We’ve got a good one planned for Sunday, June 30th at 6:00 pm.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

We are offering an end of summer VBS at Living Water “On the Mountain High and in the Valley Low” program taking place August 12-16 from 1-4 pm each day.  Cana Myers is leading our team this year and would love to have you volunteer to serve the kids by leading Bible story time, games, check in/out, snacks, crafts, lifeguards or music. GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

August 8-9 here at Living Water. This is an event that can help you in your leadership. The GLS is also a way that you can outreach to the community by helping community members get training on their leadership in their businesses and organizations. As a part of Living Water you have very reduced rates (use the code GLS19TEAM) when you register athttps://globalleadership.org/global-leadership-summit/

MISSIONS NEWS

-      Guatemala Mission Trip. A group from our church is heading to Guatemala soon and would like to bring some baby supplies – there is a box in the outer lobby if you want to donate Formula (0-12 months), baby wipes, and diapers sizes 3 & 4. Contact Eric Palmer at 970-219-8833 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

-      Jim and Jerry Casey serving in Alaska.  Our sunrise today was at 4:19 am and sunset tonight will be at 11:40 pm. Our days are definitely long right now and even after sunset, twilight makes it very easy to see and I wouldn’t call it dark outside! The longest day is this week and then we slowly start heading the other direction again….. the pattern of life and seasons. Jerry has been busy flying every day from 7 am to 5 pm with the three high school students, they are getting some good hours in with the good weather. They did a cross country last week to Kenai and Homer and this week they will do a cross country to Talkeetna and Fairbanks. He has three more days this week and then two days next week and then the program ends for him. Next Wednesday there is a graduation from the program picnic we will attend.  Should be fun! Pray for these kids as they make life choices!  My health has had a roller coaster ride the last week but I am coming out on top now….. The anti-fungal lozenges made me sick with flu like symptoms for about three days but that is much better now and my tongue has improved. Still coughing the same, but I seem to have more energy again, which is a nice change. Some symptoms are gone, others linger but overall I am seeing improvement, especially in the last few days. I wonder sometimes if getting worse makes me appreciate the baseline symptoms I have learned to live with? Random thought…..Please continue to pray for my health and for us to see steady improvement. We have a few people come and go with hospitality the last week and this week and the fellowship has been good and we hope they have found this place peaceful and restful. God seems to be sending just the right balance of guests this summer to our home. Not overwhelming but a nice coming and going of people to share with and learn how God is working in their lives. This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Aileen Fitzpatrick returned from North Africa about four months ago and has for now completed her missionary service in that regionI wanted to let you all know that I will be in Alamosa July 9-23 (she’ll be sharing some of her story at our July 14 worship services).  I'll be staying over on 7th street in town, and I'd love to see as many people as possible. I'm flying into and out of Alamosa. I don't have any specific plans as of yet. I am in town to see partners and friends.  I want to make sure that I get face to face time with as many people as possible.  Just wanted to let you know, so we can start making plans.  Let me know if you are planning to be in town during that time, and if you want to set a time to meet already. This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Jeremy and Beth Schmidt serving in North Africa. The Schmidts are planning to be with us at Living Water August 11th.  If you want to contact Jeremy or Beth please let John Clark know as for security reasons they are very guarded in their communications.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Wendell and Heather Garrison serving in British Columbia.  The Garrisons recently celebrated the lodge passing a major inspection and had a Grand Opening on May 25th.  It’s been a long term dream (and labor of love) to be able to host campers at Rock Nest Ranch on a year round basis so this is a major celebration.  Pray for their summer program which is in full swing.  I don’t know if they are still looking for more summer staff or not.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Dan and Melinda Nelson serving Latin America. Dan is currently looking for someone to be the Initiative Leader for the Bajio region (6 states) in central Mexico.  This person would coordinate efforts with existing churches and missionaries.  This is the “least reached” part of Mexico, having proved itself to be more resistant to the gospel than other parts of the country.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Chris and Faith Creech serving pastors and churches in America and AsiaChris and Faith have been traveling in Asia on a teaching tour.  Faith’s health for several months was very poor.  They found a doctor that helped them while traveling and the last I heard she was feeling much better.  Please continue to pray for energy and health for Chris and Faith.  This email address is being protected from spambots. All repairs aligned with being a vehicle of almost 20 years old. Ball-joints, brakes, and countless other things made it not even worth creating a repair quote and made the decision to replace clear. Okinawa heat, humidity, and typhoons is hard on vehicles and I have seen many vans of the same make, model, and year find the same fate. Thankfully we have teammate's vehicle we can use as long as we need until we find a good replacement. Also, the road tax fees will be refunded to us. Please pray for a replacement that will serve us well the remainder of our time in Oki (5 years). If you would like to give toward a toward a replacement, that would be welcome as well. This email address is being protected from spambots. Handling New Situations

Ted just finished his training session at the local McDonalds. So he as a little nervous behind the register for the first time. His first customer ordered a Milkshake. “Ted,” his manager said, “Remember to say ‘Welcome to McDonalds’ to each customer before they order.” His second customer ordered a Cheeseburger. This time, the manager approached Ted again, and said “Remember to ask each customer if they want fries with their order.” At this point a man came in wearing a ski mask, approached Ted at the register and pointed a gun in his face. “Give me all the money you got in that register kid!” Ted took one look at his manager, thought for a second, and quickly said, “Would you like that for here or to go?”

Life has a way of giving us what we didn’t expect. Things might come this week that we weren’t ready for. We might not know how to handle life’s challenges. But isn’t it good to know that nothing takes God by surprise? Isn’t it wonderful to know that the one who loves us already knows what our future looks like?

“Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!”  (Psalm 139:16-17)

And isn’t it good to know that God uses all things, even unexpected things, even bad things, for our ultimate good?

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

In view of these truths, let us be thankful in changing times or surprising news that we aren’t at the mercy of chance or of evil intent!  May we trust in our Lord when the unexpected comes.  May we rest in his plans and his wisdom and his sufficiency. He’s got us in his grip of grace and we are ultimately safe!  It’s so wonderful to have a God who never leaves us nor forsakes us.  He is not leaving you or forsaking you today. The all-powerful, all wise creator is with you always, even to the end of the age.

Would you like some fries with this truth?

CHURCH NEWS

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY CHANGES AHEAD

Well I knew it was going to happen sometime, and it finally did.  Over the years we at Living Water have enjoyed wonderful continuity in our Children’s Ministry leadership, but the time has come for both Becky (Lily Pad) and Chris Ann (Kidsplash) to step away. If I’ve got my years correct, Chris Ann served more than 11 years and Becky served more than 9 years. Becky started a full time job last year in education in Monte Vista and Chris Ann is starting a new job with the BLM later this summer. Both of them felt that they weren’t going to be in a position this year to give enough time or energy to serving the kids at a high level.  Parents, please take the time to thank them and bless them for how they served your kids!  Both will be leading through the end of July. With the baby boom that’s happened at Living Water the last few years and with all the new families in our church and with the decision of the congregation to vote for a new Christian Education Community Building it’s important that we work hard at having a great Children’s Ministry in the future. So over the coming weeks we pastors and Elders are going to be reviewing our current program and curriculum and prayerfully think and dream about the future of how we as a church family can best partner with parents in the discipleship of their kids. Parents and educators in our church, if you have some ideas or perspectives on the future of our Children’s Ministry we’d love to hear from you. Our mission is to lead kids to a life changing and ever growing relationship with Christ.  Please be praying for God to lead Living Water into the best system/program/structure possible!

BUILDING NEWS

If you haven’t heard, our congregation has decided to move forward on the expanding our facilities through the construction of a Christian Education Community Building. Through the summer there will be a lot of planning and details lined up and we’ll be giving you regular communication.  In June and July Pastor Greg and the Facility and Finance Team will be filing loan application documents and making sure we are ready to go on that side of things. Starting in the August/September time frame we’ll launch a Building Fund Campaign. Our current timeline is to see groundbreaking by summer of 2020.

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP DONATIONS

A group from our church is heading to Guatemala soon and would like to bring some baby supplies – there is a box in the outer lobby if you want to donate Formula (0-12 months), baby wipes, and diapers sizes 3 & 4. What was Spoken

We had a wonderful turn out at the Special Business Meeting on Sunday. I had the great joy of hearing the news spoken that the motion to expand our facilities passed with a very high percentage (92%). What I heard through this vote is that you want to impact our community for Christ. Praise God! I can’t tell you how encouraging this is for a pastor! In the years ahead as we work to make the vision of this building a reality, we will be speaking all kinds of messages through our actions: When this structure goes up and we call it a “community building” our neighbors will hear that we care about them. When the building is erected and we call it an “educational building,” parents will hear that we care about their kids and we want them to thrive.  When we come to that point of opening the doors for the first time, when all the giving and sacrificing has come to pass and the vision is reality, the Lord will have heard how serious we are about his work of making disciples and the Community will know that God did something amazing in their midst. Thank you for speaking a big “YES” on Sunday! Over the coming months our Elder Board and Pastoral Staff will do our best to keep you up to date on the progress and how you can help get this new ministry tool up and running.

Let’s make up our mind to go to work like the people of Jerusalem did in Nehemiah’s day. The wall around Jerusalem was broken down and the city was vulnerable to attack. Nehemiah presented a vision for seeing it restored and the people responded and came together and worked shoulder to shoulder to get it built up. “So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work” (Neh 4:6). Let’s have the mind to get this building done! Let’s live with the vision of making disciples of our kids and grandkids and let’s live with the vision of reaching our community with the gospel. Let’s pray and work and give towards the completion of this building. The people of Israel faced some challenges but they got it done and the Lord was glorified. “So the wall was finished…And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God” (6:15-16).

CHURCH NEWS

Worship Services at 9:00 and 10:45

-      This Sunday we’ll finish the Ten Commandments. The Gospel will be shared so it would be a great Sunday to invite a lost person to join you at a worship service!

New Church Office Hours

The church office is now open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Nursery Update

After many years of serving as our Nursery Director Anna Gearhart has decided that the time is right for her to step away from leading our Nursery ministry. She’s on vacation now with her family, but please take the time when you get a chance to thank her for her devotion and hard work. She has left this ministry in good shape. The Nursery is in good hands in the interim and we’re already talking to some folks about stepping into the leadership role.

Praise Team Update

With Pastor Collin moving to New Mexico to lead a church, we are currently without a Praise Team director. In the coming weeks, after reviewing the job description, we’ll move towards posting the opening and inviting people to apply for the job. Leading the Praise Team is a very challenging job in a church as diverse as Living Water. We have a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and preferred musical styles. Pray for the Lord’s leading in this hiring process!  Pray for the Lord to bring us the right person to lead our Praise Team. One of the beautiful things that has happened at Living Water in the past, which allowed us to thrive in unity and reach more people with the gospel was that in the late 1990’s / early 2000’s, the people of this church made the decision to set aside their musical preferences out of concern for reaching others with the gospel. At that time the leadership was wrestling with the idea of closing the church because of very low numbers. But that 1 Corinthians 9:23 decision (“I do it all for the sake of the gospel”) helped bring new life and vibrancy to our church. At that time we shifted from a “hymn sing” church to a “contemporary” musical style. It was one of the major decisions (not without difficulty and pain!) that the Lord used to bring about the wonderful season of ministry we’ve had over the last 20 years. With that same spirit of “it’s not about us Lord,” let’s pray for our passion to reach the SLV and make disciples to trump our individual and varied musical preferences. When the hearts of believers are in the right place, and what we truly want is for the Lord Jesus to be exalted, the style is secondary for the mature Christian. Having said that we will continue on with the established standard of the ABC’s for our music ministry… Aesthetically pleasing / striving for excellence, Biblically Based lyrics that speak truthfully and accurately about God and life, and Congregational applicable songs / songs that everyone can sing along and magnify the Lord with. If you play the drums, guitar or keyboard it would be a great time to think about joining the Praise Team as we prayerfully seek God’s direction for the future.  Contact Pastor Jeron if you are interested (589-6351 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

COLLEGE MINISTRY UPDATE

This summer one of the things on my radar is to restart our college ministry. While the numbers of college students coming to Alamosa has been lower, it’s still an incredible mission field that we have before us – hundreds and hundreds of young adults who don’t know Jesus!  So would you please be in prayer the reorganization and a relaunch of our ministry to ASU and Trinidad State?  We got some exciting news that 2 couples are moving here to be missionaries to college students and I believe they are both going to be plugging into Living Water as their church family!  So we’ll have some updates soon on what’s happening. But maybe as you think about the Fall, you could consider the opportunity to adopt a college student or start opening your home to college meals. While times change and society changes, people will still respond to loving, open arms. How might you be able to serve college students this Fall?

A Heart for God's Work

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me’” (Isaiah 6:8).  Religion for a lot of people is about what you have to do to get a better life. Man-made religion and religious activity is what you do for yourself (going to church, participating in religious rituals, being seen by others doing “godly” things).  True religion is found in behaviors, activities and disciplines which are undertaken out of love for God and a love for people. All too often we can fall into the trap of doing religious things to get what we want instead of living on mission out of a love for Jesus. When I envision a great church I see a Saving church – a group of blood bought sinners who excitedly want to see people get saved and who sacrificially lead people to the one who remade them into saints.  I see a Sent church – a rescued people who invest in others in Jesus’ name because they have been transformed by the church and want to serve Jesus by serving others.  I see a Supporting church – a people who understand that life is not mean to be lived alone, who invest in each other’s lives, building up and nurturing homes and families in Christ’s incredible love and values. I see a Sheltering church – a people who have been loved so well by the Lord and his church that they are truly concerned about their neighbors lives and challenges, and are open handed with their resources. I see a people who aren’t worldly, who aren’t living for self, who say to the Lord, “Here I am! Send me!” and mean it.  A great church in my opinion is a people which has a heart for the things of God, who love the things that God loves and who are zealous for the things that matter most to God.  Let’s be that church – let’s not follow the world and its self-absorption. Let’s in all we do seek to advance God’s mission even if it means suffering and hardships. Let’s be that church that leads people to Jesus!  Let’s be that church that loves each other and loves our neighbors sacrificially. Let’s not be passive but in the months ahead let’s get focused on helping people build their lives on the Lord Jesus Christ. It starts with a healthy heart for the Lord and it begins with honest prayer and a contrite heart: “Lord if we’ve been living for ourselves we repent. Lord if we have lost our first love we repent.  Lord if we’ve made your worship and glory about us we repent. Lord if we’ve gotten lazy or lost our focus, restore us Lord! It’s not about us Lord, it’s about you. Have your way Lord, have your way. Here we are Lord! Send us!”

THIS SUNDAY

-      We’re celebrating the Lord’s Supper. Please be aware that we shut the sanctuary doors during communion to minimize distractions. Worship services start at 9:00 and 10:45. From now on our communion wafers will be gluten free.

-      The Sermon is on the 7th Commandment, so a heads up to parents that I’ll be speaking frankly about sexual issues as I preach. It’s an opportunity to use the sermon in your family to talk about God’s view of sexuality and marriage.

-      Children’s Ministries are back: It was good to give our volunteers a break on Memorial Day weekend but both Lily Pad and Kidsplash will be open to receive and serve your children this Sunday.

Why?

Dear Church Family and Friends,

If you weren’t able to join us for one of the worship services on Sunday, Greg Bervig did a great job in explaining the proposed expansion of our facility. Please check out our website www.livingwateralamosa.org to get all the information our building committee gave out on Sunday on the proposed building project, including some drawings of the building, the needs it will meet, the plan for paying for it and an estimated timeline. I love what is being proposed, but what I most appreciated from the presentation was the “WHY” – why would we go to the time and effort and expense to add a building on our campus?  Because our mission is to lead people to a life-changing and ever-growing relationship with Jesus Christ!  Personally, I’m not interested in just having more buildings for more buildings sake.  But I am deeply interested in having a building that will allow us to more effectively serve and minister to people in Jesus’ name. Let’s move forward in faith and set the table for effectively serving children and families, as well as our community, for decades in the future!  Join us Sunday, June 2nd for a short business meeting to take place after the second worship service. At this meeting we’ll vote on proceeding with the proposed building project.

Here’s some of what’s happening in the near future at Living Water…

THIS SUNDAY

-      The Sermon this Sunday is on the 6th Commandment. While it’s only a few words, it’s nonetheless a very weighty command that impacts how we live life: “You shall not murder” (20:13). And yes, among other things, I’m going to talk about the controversial issue of abortion. I won’t do so in a political way, but will seek to address the issue with lots of understanding and grace.

-      No Children’s Ministries: With Memorial Day on Monday and lots of families not in attendance there won’t be children’s ministries offered this Sunday, May 26. Lily Pad and Kidsplash will resume Sunday, June 2.

-      Hymn Sing at 6:00 pm in the sanctuary

GOING AWAY FELLOWSHIP for Pastor Collin and Leila Brooks TONIGHT!

We’re gathering on Wednesday night May 22 to say thank and say goodbye to the Brooks as they depart to lead a church in New Mexico. Time is 6:30-8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

SPECIAL BUSINESS MEETING June 2

The Elders are calling on the church to gather on Sunday, June 2nd at 12:15 pm in the Sanctuary for a short Business Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to vote to authorize the funding and construction of proposed Christian Education / Discipleship building. The original plan was to have a special business meeting in May, but the Building Committee needed to do some more work with the architect, which pushed back our timeline. So the new date for the Special Business Meeting is June 2nd

YOUTH GROUP NEWS

If you are going to be a 6th grader in the Fall you are welcome to start attending Reign Youth Group this summer!  Reign currently is meeting at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays but watch for updates on possible time change for the summer.

Looking for Hope

Dear Living Water Family,

With all that is happening in the world today, people are looking for hope!  Thanks for all you do point others to Christ. Let’s remember that we have the most hopeful message the world has ever heard!  Let’s prayerfully look for opportunities to share the good news about Jesus with people and invite them to put their faith in him as Savior and Lord. Let us live out our faith today, responding to the grace and love of Jesus by loving and serving others in his name. “You are the salt of the earth… you are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16).

Here’s some of what’s happening at Living Water in the near future…

THIS SUNDAY

Worship services are at 9:00 and 10:45. Nursery offered both services. Children’s ministry for preschool – 5th grade in the Sprung Building at 10:45

We’re moving week by week through the 10 Commandments in our Exodus Sermon Series. This week we are looking at how to apply the 5th Commandment, “Honor your father and mother.” As our nation celebrates this Mother’s Day holiday weekend, what does it mean to honor our mother and father before God?

MOLDOVA MISSION TRIP last call!

Our missionary Dan Stafford visited us earlier this year and extended the invitation for folks to join him on a two week trip to the small country of Moldova September 26-October 9. May 15 is the deadline to lock in your spot! Contact Mission Director John Clark asap This email address is being protected from spambots. Mexico Trip

Dear Church Family and Friends,

Wanted to thank you for letting me travel to Mexico!  The picture below was taken with some of the folks who stayed for lunch after a worship service at the last church we visited. What I’ve noticed is that whether it’s in Peru or Japan or the Philippines or Alamosa, that when people love the Lord Jesus and love each other, worship is always sweet regardless of the musical style or the language spoken. I hope in the years ahead that we’ll start sending teams to Mexico to do VBS’s or projects to help our sister churches in the Great Commission. The area we traveled in and I hope we can work in in the future is very religious but also very hopeless without Jesus. Maybe we’ll even see some missionaries sent from our church on a long term basis? I’m so grateful for the work God has done in Alamosa at Living Water and am anticipating he’ll use us more and more in the future. Let’s continue to pour into each other’s lives as a church family and keep building each other up in Jesus. May our hearts burst with love for the lost and may the Lord stir up our passion and zeal to share the good news so that they might be saved – both here in the San Luis Valley and abroad. Please pray for Iglesia Biblica and other small churches who are standing strong for Jesus and his Gospel in spite of persecution.

Here’s what’s happening at Living Water in the weeks ahead…

THIS SUNDAY

-      We’re celebrating the Lord’s Sacrifice for our Salvation this Sunday by observing the Lord’s Supper.

-      Our Exodus Sermon Series resumes with a focus on the fourth commandment “Remember the Sabbath Day…” Is this a timeless principle that we are supposed to observe or was it just meant for Israel? Are we offending God by not having a special day set aside for worship and rest or are we Christians not obligated to keep this Old Covenant law?  Why do we gather for worship on Sundays and not Saturdays if the Jewish people rested and worshiped on Saturdays?

REACH OUT

We had a pretty typical Easter attendance with about 670 people in attendance on Resurrection Sunday morning. I want to encourage you to follow up with folks that visited our church. If you saw someone you know attending for the first time or who was here but don’t normally attend services, I would like you to reach out to them and follow up.  Perhaps invite them to coffee or to a meal and see where they are with the Lord. See if they want to know more about connecting with God or maybe just hear their story, or answer their questions about our church. It’s a big deal for people to come to a worship service, but they need to hear from us that there is so much more! I’m sure that most people would appreciate you asking them about their experience and checking in with them about their beliefs and where they stand with Christ – could be the open door you have been praying for – don’t miss the opportunity!

Pastor Jeron

Over the last 6 months our church has thrived in various ways. Over the last 6 months our church has struggled in various ways. On the one hand our membership keeps growing. Many of you reading this Update have decided to tie into the body of Christ in a deeper way and I’m so thankful for you!  And I’m happy to report that the majority of our members are serving in one capacity or another, seeking to use their spiritual gifts. On the other hand we still have people who are connected to our church but we hear after the fact that they went through a trial or tribulation alone.  And we still have a lot of members and non-members who aren’t involved with others in a Bible study or a Community Group during the week.  We are all too often still disconnected from one another. It grieves me to know that people are isolated and alone. Over the last 6 months financial giving has been incredible. Our church is so generous and it a reason to rejoice!  Thank you especially recently for all the support given to the children (Waves quizzing, Reign youth group and Eagle Lake summer camp).  Over the last 6 months, on the other hand, I haven’t heard of many conversion stories, and I haven’t heard of many people sharing their faith during the week. I rejoice that worship attendance has held steady but I long to see our church “on fire” to reach people with the gospel. One of the areas we’re struggling with is reaching college students, and we are also struggling in knowing how to mobilize our church to reach out and serve the community.  On the thriving side of things, over the last 6 months our men’s ministry has really been healthy, in terms of numbers it’s the most interest I’ve seen in my time as pastor. Over the last 6 months our Family Team has been thriving and making a big impact on marriages and right now they are striving to help parents to parent well. On the struggling side of things, right now our Worship Team is struggling with how to move forward in a healthy way together as there are people going through hard life challenges, and there are some folks who are struggling with questions of doctrine and theology (you might of heard something of this, but the Elder Board is involved, and given the people involved I’m sure things will be resolved – if you have heard something that is causing you stress give me a call and we can talk about it).  Over the last 6 months I’ve rejoiced to see a new vision for a Discipleship / Christian Education building come about and I’m excited for the possibility of it being erected in the future (Please pray for the team as they meet tonight to refine the plans!).  At the same time I’m struggling with where our culture is going spiritually and how there seems to be a real lack of interest right now in God.

WHEW!  Lot’s to pray about!  Lots to give thanks for!  Lots to depend on God for!  And I haven’t even talked about everything going on!

What I’ve learned as a pastor is that the church will always have seasons of thriving and seasons of struggling. We can do everything right and sometimes ministries and programs still struggle; we can make lots of mistakes and sometimes things just grow and grow!  No matter what, the church will always have things going well alongside things that need some work. The church isn’t a machine that just needs some scheduled maintenance now and then to keep it healthy. We are the church and we as people aren’t perfect. We are a group of people who have ups and downs and fears and struggles. We can’t control circumstance and we have an enemy who works against us and who would gladly see us give up on ministry or give in to division. And it would be easy to do so at times, because none of us has time for difficulties or conflict as we have enough problems at home (taking care of marriages, raising kids, dealing with career or health problems).

When I look to the future I don’t think much will change in our church. We’ll always have lots to worry about and lots to rejoice over! Ha! How do you like them apples? But through it all let’s keep the main thing the main thing – the good news!  Jesus is alive and Jesus is coming back!  It’s Easter season and Resurrection Sunday is drawing near.  What a great season to remember what is essential and to remember our mission. We exist to lead people to a life-changing and ever growing relationship in Christ!  A church on mission has a focus that doesn’t let it get too high or too low nor allow it to not be needful of one-another. A church on mission is too wrapped up in essential matters to get bogged down in secondary matters. A church on mission is where I want to be.

“Now I want to remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Here’s some of what’s happening in the near future at Living Water:

THIS SUNDAY

-      It’s Palm Sunday and in the Sermon on Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem I’ll be talking about Jesus’ amazing claims regarding his identity.

-      There is another Parent Luncheon taking place at noon or shortly after in the Fellowship Hall this Sunday. Super excited to continue this new series. The sessions will be shorter than Date nights, food will be included as well as day care and a great topic will be covered.  The first one was on how to encourage your children in faith. This luncheon will be on parent and children relationships.  If you can RSVP that would be helpful - call/text Alison 321-356-4790 or  Cheryl 719-588-0121

-      This Sunday the Eagle Lake Camp Team is hosting a Bake Sale Fundraiser in the lobby.

-      Children’s Ministry Camp Experience: Lily Pad and Kidsplash are hosting a special day for your kids this Sunday at 10:45 in the Sprung Building.  Kids are encouraged to dress as knights, kings, princesses or peasants and enter into “Everland; Tales of the Rescued.” Consider coming to the first worship service as a family and then going to Tales of the Rescued” at 10:45

Make April 21 an Outreach Sunday!  Postcards (see above) are being sent out to the community this week. Invite someone who doesn’t know Christ to join you at a service on Easter. Good Friday service is 7:00 pm on April 19th and the Sunday Services will be 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 am on April 21. VISION TRIP

One of our missionary couples we support at Living Water is Dan and Melinda Nelson. They’ve been working at planting churches in Mexico. April 23-29 our Mission Director John Clark and I are traveling to the Guadalajara region of Mexico to tour various areas with them for the purpose of prayerfully considering getting Living Water more involved in church planting in an area in desperate need of a gospel witness. Please pray for our wisdom and discernment and safety and health in our traveling.

NEW BUILDING VISION UPDATE

Great progress is being made on the design plan for the proposed Discipleship / Community Building. We are getting more and more excited about the possible impact of this tool on our mission effectiveness. Please pray for the ongoing process and the Lord’s leading regarding this proposed ministry and outreach tool. The Committee is planning on giving out information to the church in late April and the Elders anticipate calling a special business meeting in May. Tentative Special Business Meeting date (and church wide BBQ!) is May 19.
