Establishing a Rhythm

Written by

Good morning church! I heard a rumor that Summer was over. Is it true?  For many, post-Labor day week is when Fall routines get set. I hope you are making a good transition and finding your rhythm.

May I humbly make a suggestion? As you set your schedule make sure God has a non-negotiable place in your daily and weekly routine. It seems like a small thing, but if we don’t dictate how our time is used, we tend to make our relationship with the Lord secondary. It’s amazing how our commitments shape our soul! Our relationship with Jesus isn’t meant to be an add on when we remember, nor is He supposed to be getting mere scraps of time that we cobble together. When we don’t set aside time for the Lord we feel far away from God and we end up feeling bad about letting this relationship suffer. So my suggestion - Make the Lord a priority this Fall, by prioritizing Him in your schedule. What does this look in normal life? How does this work?  Daily: Set aside as non-negotiable a time of Bible reading and prayer. Some stages of life (having infants or toddlers for example) can make this commitment difficult but the alternative is that your time hearing from God and communicating with God is hit or miss, and some weeks if you don’t have this commitment, it will be all miss. Weekly: Whether you are home or traveling, attend a worship service each Sunday. Not for legalistic reasons or to impress anyone, but simply to have a time set apart for the worship of God. There is something special about the commitment to gather with the church family week in and week out. I’ve noticed that the people who have this commitment are much more stable in their relationship with the Lord and they are those who feel closer to God and tend to be more involved in using their spiritual gifts and engaging in ministry to others. This simple rhythm of living, grounds you and helps you stay connected to the Lord.  Along the same lines it’s important to have a weekly connection to a group of Christians whom you can be relationally close to. Frankly we need people praying for us and supporting us. We need practical acts of love. We need accountability. Whether it’s a weekly coffee with a mentor or a weekly Community Group or Bible Study we are blessed to have a living connection with real people.  Monthly: At Living Water we celebrate a monthly Lord’s Supper observance in our worship services. I suggest that you schedule into your life some kind of a monthly routine in which you have a time of confession of sins, or a special time of prayer, or a time of fasting and prayer. Maybe you keep a journal during the month and then monthly take the time to read through it to pick up themes or moods that have entered in to your life and prayerfully consider what kind of spiritual disciplines which might be appropriate to apply given the state of your soul. Maybe it’s a monthly celebration as a family where you go out to eat and celebrate what the Lord has done, having each family member share something from the month they are thankful for? Or Maybe your small group does a monthly worship service that is special? Or maybe your Bible study does a monthly outreach to the community? Schedule it and don’t let the world encroach upon your sacred time. Establishing routine in our schedule is incredibly helpful for our souls. Our modern world gives us unlimited entertainment opportunities and our consumer shaped heart are easily bought by marketing promises. Having Christ formed in us requires time and if we don’t devote and dedicate time to the Lord we won’t grow more mature nor will we be close to him – if you never move close to the Lord why in the world should it surprise you if you end up feeling far away from him?  Make sacred appointments in your calendar – you won’t regret it!

Here’s some of how you can get involved in your church family in the weeks ahead…

SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S MINISTRY – Starts this Sunday!

We’re excited to have your kids (preschool-5th grade) join us this Sunday!  We’re launching a new system and style – here’s the plan:  Parents, when you come to the 10:45 service, arrive a bit early to check in your kids. There are three kiosks in the main building (outer lobby, inner lobby and by west double doors). If your kids haven’t participated in our children’s ministry before, allow a bit more time to get registered. But if we already have your kids in our system, just find their names, check them in and print some identification labels – there will be people present to help!  Then come into the sanctuary for worship!  All the children will start out in the worship service and then midway through the service they will be released (after the offering, we will sing the Doxology as a sign for them to go) and they will be escorted from the lobby to the Sprung Building (children can of course can stay in the whole worship service with parents and not participate in children’s ministry).  After the service go and pick up your kids in the Sprung Building using your printed label as identification. This Fall we are using a curriculum called “The Gospel Project” which will help children see the Bible as one story of God’s plan to save the world through Jesus Christ. Children will hear the Gospel each Sunday, learn a Bible story (as well as the big-picture story of what God has done through history) and be encouraged to live out their faith every week. Contact Pastor Bo if you would like to serve the kids as a teacher or helper this Fall! This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 719-529-1204

A STORY OF FAITH AND SURVIVAL October 6

Siv Ashley started her life as a normal child in an average, happy family in Cambodia. She was surrounded by loving family members. On April 16, 1975, everything changed. Red soldiers evacuated her family with thousands of Cambodians and marched them to work camps to work in the government’s rice fields. Children worked 12 hour days. They were fed only rice and water. Siv’s enduring faith and prayers helped her survive against all odds. Come hear her compelling and inspiring story, Sunday evening October 6 at 6:00pm, here at Living Water.

LIVING WATER FALL CHURCH RETREAT - November 14-16

Save the date! We’ll once again be meeting at the Spring Canyon Retreat & Conference Center located in the beautiful mountains outside of Buena Vista, Co. Our speaker this year is Gene Binder. Gene is the founder of Cornerstone Boulder in Boulder, Colorado. He was raised in the conservative branch of Judaism until the age of 10, and began following Rabbi Yeshua (Jesus) at the age of 31. Gene pursued an MA from Talbot Theological Seminary and has been a pastor for more than thirty years. Many affectionately call him Rabbi Gene. Our theme is “Connecting the Dots” (based upon the title of Gene’s book) and we’ll be looking at how we as Christians are connected with Israel and the Jewish people – how the Old Testament and Israel’s story is connected to Jesus and Christian history. Ultimately we’ll “Connect the Dots” to our story and how God uses us in his redemptive plan.

What are we building our life upon?

Written by

What are we building our life upon?  As we enter a season of seeking to add a new church building (Bringing Life Project coming soon!) what is our church family built upon? Having great tools like a new Christian Education Community Building is going to be great, but the church needs to have a healthy relationship and walk with the Lord in order to use the tool to its full potential. So the Sundays in September (and spilling into October) the sermons are going to focus on the foundational elements of the Christian life. Are you building your life upon the right things?  Are we practicing the things which bring life to a community? This Sunday we’ll start the Building Blocks sermon series with a focus on Jesus as The Cornerstone from Ephesians 2:11-22. We’ll be celebrating the Lord’s Supper at 9:00 and 10:45.

REIGN YOUTH GROUP FALL LAUNCH Tonight!

On Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm, Living Water has a youth meeting where teens (6th grade – 12th grade) meet with God through the study of his Word and through prayer and worship. Students entering the 6th grade this Fall are invited to join Reign (bring your parents!) on Wednesday, August 28 as the group kids off their Fall program. Contact Cliff & Cari Kincannon at 719-852-3591 for information or to ask questions.

SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE – Starts September 8th!

Parents and those interested in serving in Children’s Ministry this Fall, please join Pastor Bo in the Sprung building after the second service this Sunday (Sep. 1st) for a Children's Ministry "Open House.” If you are a parent wanting to know what your child will study this Fall, come look through the curriculum and ask questions! If you are someone looking to serve children as a teacher or helper, come and find out what roles you can fill! Join us!

For those of you coming to worship services this Sunday, there will be check in kiosks in the lobby that you can practice checking in children and printing out nametags.

This Fall we are changing things up in our children’s ministry. For the last decade we’ve offered a “children’s church” style ministry during the 10:45 service where kids were checked in before the worship service and checked out after the service. Starting Sunday, September 8th we’re launching a new structure during our 10:45 service in which kids (preschool-5th grade) will all start out in the worship service and then midway through the service they will be released for age-appropriate classes (children can of course can stay in the worship service with parents and not participate in children’s ministry). We are striving for children to be more integrated with the larger congregation, and we want them to participate with their parents in worshiping the Lord in such things as singing, offering and taking the Lord’s Supper, but we also want to children to learn the Bible in a way that meets them where they are through age appropriate classes and content. Extroverted Church

Written by

The last several weeks we’ve had a lot of people coming into our buildings. We’ve hosted Eagle Lake Camp, Vacation Bible School, Global Leadership Summit, as well as the Adams State University football team. WHEW!

Additionally we’ve been inviting people to join us for ministries and programs that are launching and of course we are welcoming new people every Sunday to our public worship services. Not only that but we’ve sent teams out this summer, reaching out to people cross-culturally and have started supporting more missionaries.

Where does this eagerness come from?  Why go to all the trouble and work to reach out to people who don’t share our values or convictions, who don’t believe what we believe?  Why not be a church that just keeps to ourselves and worships God privately?  Because as the saying goes, it is not about us. As Jesus “came to seek and save the lost,” as Jesus came “not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many” we have an inward drive and a biblical mandate to be an outgoing, risk taking, loving our neighborhood in Jesus’ name, local church.

The Spirit of God is prompting us and urging us and moving us to be about Jesus’ mission of reaching out to people and calling them to become his disciples. The Holy Spirit is stirring us up to love people and help them know the love of God in Christ. “Rather than driving us deeper into ourselves, away from other people and external authorities, the Spirit drives us outside of ourselves by a public word and ministry that makes us extroverted – looking up  to Christ in faith, looking forward in hope, and looking out to our neighbors in love” (Michael Horton).

“For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised…All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us” (2nd Corinthians 5:14-15,18-20).

Let’s continue to become a healthier and heathier group of Jesus followers. Let’s continue to become more and more extroverted and outward focused as a church, so that we can have more opportunities to share the Gospel, so that we can see our Lord glorified and know the joy of seeing lives transformed by the power of God.

Here’s some of what’s happening at Living Water in the coming weeks…

Biblical Worldview and The News

Written by

Boy, I made the mistake again yesterday of scrolling through world news. I imagine people who spend a lot of time watching cable news or scrolling through online news sites might live in a lot of fear. Shootings, Tariffs, Impeachment, Nuclear Weapons, Rising Seas, War, Racism, Ebola, Comet Near Earth, are but a portion of the disturbing headlines from yesterday. None of the headlines or articles I read tempered the bad news with the reality that God has the whole world in his hands.  As Christians we are called to live with and process life through a biblical filter; God has revealed to us in the Bible what is truly happening behind the scenes.  If we take in the news from the perspective of secular thinking or cultural ways of thinking or man-made religious ways of thinking we will be overcome by fear.  So don’t read the news without first reading your Bible!  A biblical view of the world allows us to process and interpret properly the endless stream of bad news or political rhetoric that comes our way. With a Christian worldview you can take the fearful images and reporting and put things into perspective – the world is a messed up place full of great evil and horrific suffering - but we aren’t adrift in a random, purposeless existence in which you have to live in fear. Biblically we know that God is ruling and biblically we know that God is still reconciling people to himself and building his church. And biblically we know that nothing will separate us from Christ or his kingdom. Don’t let CNN news or MSNBC news or FOX news shape your view of the world, let your Bible shape your worldview and interpretation of the news!

“The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!” (Psalm 93:3-4).

Here’s some of what’s happening at Living Water in the weeks ahead…

THIS SUNDAY

-      We're having a Missions Emphasis at Living Water this Sunday (Services are 9:00 & 10:45). Come hear international missionaries and local folks talk about taking Jesus to the nations. Where might God send you? Great Sunday for your family to attend and then have a talk with the kids about spreading the gospel / praying about serving cross-culturally.

-      There is also a School Supply Drop Off container in the lobby if you want to donate to the Women’s Ministry Team’s supply drive.

SUNDAY MORNING KIDS MINISTRY STARTS SEPTEMBER 8TH

This Fall we are changing things up in our children’s ministry! For the last decade we’ve offered a “children’s church” style ministry during the 10:45 service where kids were checked in before the worship service and checked out after the service. Starting Sunday, September 8th we’re launching a new structure during our 10:45 service in which kids (preschool-5thgrade) will all start out in the worship service and then midway through the service they will be released for age-appropriate classes (children can of course can stay in the worship service with parents and not participate in children’s ministry). We are striving for children to be more integrated with the larger congregation, and we want them to participate with their parents in worshiping the Lord in such things as singing, offering and taking the Lord’s Supper, but we also want to children to learn the Bible in a way that meets them where they are through age appropriate classes and content. See you September 8th! Contact Pastor Bo if you would like to serve the kids as a teacher or helper this Fall! This email address is being protected from spambots. Our first official meeting will be on Wednesday morning, September 4th. MOPS is an acronym for Moms Of Preschoolers and is a ministry geared towards women from pregnancy through Kindergarten. We build friendships, share in each other’s motherhood and life struggles, and most importantly we point moms to the source of all hope, Jesus. This is a relational outreach ministry, and we have many moms who do not currently have a relationship with Jesus.

We will have a table set up in the lobby before and after the services on Sunday, August 18th to answer any questions you may have about the MOPS ministry and to show you how you can get involved. If you know any moms who have children ages 0-6, please point her in our direction. Filling the Earth

Written by

I don’t know about you but my summer has been the craziest in memory. In the chaos of modern living it’s easy to forget our purpose.  The other day I had a great opportunity to meet a new neighbor (we’ve recently moved) but I walked right on by because I was so busy doing “important” things. I missed my opportunity to fulfill my purpose and felt terrible later on.

At the beginning of the Bible we have this interesting command given to the first people: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth…” (Genesis 1:29).  God wanted the folks at the beginning of the human race, who he created in his image (1:27), to multiply and populate the earth. Ever wonder why God wanted people everywhere? The short answer is that he wanted his presence everywhere – that He would be known through his people. Men and women were made in the image and likeness of God so that as they multiplied, God’s presence would be spread in the world he created. Of course when sin entered the picture the ability of humans to represent God and spread his presence through their presence was hindered. However this theme of God’s “spreading presence” carries through the whole Bible until at the end of time there isn’t a place in all of the new heaven and new earth where knowledge of God is lacking.

We as Christians, who have been given a new life, are once again charged with spreading the knowledge of God. We in fact, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, are to “take Jesus” to the ends of the earth.  Wherever you are this week, as a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), you are to an ambassador for Christ – this is what we were made for!  You are literally a place where the presence of God dwells!  This is what we were saved for and why we haven’t been taken to heaven yet because in heaven God is fully known, while in our workplaces, our community, even our homes, he is not yet known by all, so we are to purposefully spread the good news of Jesus – God has come to earth to redeem sinners and bring them to himself and to be with him forevermore in heaven. So while my not talking to my new neighbor wasn’t a huge deal, it was a missed opportunity to “present” God’s reality to her, even if it was in a small way.

All too often we get sucked into the rat race of modern living and forget our mission. Not only that but we let the business of modern living pull us away from the life giving presence of the Lord. We as Christians grow in our capacity to introduce people to the Lord through our being in the Lord’s presence. As we spend time listening to the Lord talk to us through his Bible, as we spend time in prayer, as we spend time with other Christians, being encouraged and built up together with other “people of the presence,” we increase our capacity to be people through which other people can meet God.

Let us remember again our focus - to fill the earth with the knowledge of God. To lead people to a life-giving and ever-growing relationship with Jesus Christ!

May we fill the San Luis Valley with God’s presence. May more and more people come to worship the Lord through our love and gospel witness.

A prayer that God would be present to us so that we may be present to others: May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on the earth, your saving power among the nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!” (Psalm 67:1-3).

SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

-      Starting this Sunday we’ll be taking our customary end of summer break. We won’t be offering children’s ministry on Sunday mornings August 4,11, 18, and 25, nor will we offer it on September 1st (Labor Day weekend). This is a great opportunity for the family to meet the Lord together in worship.

-      Pastor Bo will serve as our interim Director of Children’s Ministry on Sunday mornings. If you remember last year we gave him the role as Director of Discipleship, so this is a perfect fit for Bo to get involved in working with such things as curriculum selection, volunteer recruitment, volunteer training and communication with parents.

-      Fall Children’s Ministry Launch will continue as planned on Sunday, September 8 during the 10:45 service.

-      What will be different this Fall is that we are going with a new structure which I think all of us pastors are pretty excited about. Instead of the “Children’s Church” model that we’ve had for more than a decade we are going to simplify and focus on the teaching and application of God’s Word. Basically we’re going to have the kids engaged in a large group lesson and then break up into age-appropriate small groups to reinforce the lesson and make application.

-      What’s also going to be different is that we are going to release the kids to Children’s Ministry mid-service. As we talked about some of our values we realized that many kids never get to see their parents singing to the Lord or taking communion or participating in the offering. So what this is going to entail is a new order of worship this Fall where we have a regular set point before the sermon where kids (and parents) know that it’s time to go to the Children’s program (We are still looking for an appropriate name).  What we anticipate is that the kids will spend about 30 minutes worshiping with their parents in the sanctuary (a bit longer on Communion Sundays) and have about 40-45 minutes learning a biblical lesson directed towards them, on their level.

-      As part of this new structure we’re going to invest in several new “check-in” kiosks where it will be easy for parents to check in kids before the service and print out security labels to pick children up after the service.  We’ll also make the check-in of kids easy through our church app.  While we expect that this system will work well, we are also going to have a back-up system on hand in case our technology isn’t available.

-      Please pray about serving the children this Fall!  Serving children so that they know God and walk with God is a worthy investment. Pastor Bo would be happy to have you as part of the Sunday Morning Children’s Ministry Team. Contact him at 719-529-1204 for information or to ask questions.

LEADERSHIP SUMMIT is August 8-9

Leadership is about influencing people to accomplish certain objectives or goals.  In the church we all benefit when people lead well. In our community and businesses we all benefit when people lead well.  We all have influence, but we all need encouragement and training in how to be servant leaders. We’ll have 2 full days of learning from international leaders in the church and in the business world. The dates are August 8-9 and the times are 9:30 am – 5:45 pm here at Living Water. Register at https://globalleadership.org/global-leadership-summit/ and use the code GLS19TEAM for a reduced rate.

MISSIONS SUNDAY August 11

On Sunday August 11 we are going to have Jeremy and Beth Schmidt (serving in North Africa) and Brad and Gina Shaw (serving in Peru) worshipping with us and speaking to us about what God has called them to do. Have you considered serving the Lord as a cross-cultural missionary? This is a great opportunity to have your kids or grandkids here from missionaries.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL starts Monday August 12-16

This year’s VBS theme is “On The Mountain High, And In The Valley Low.” It’s a camping themed VBS where your kids will meet with God.  Bring the kids from 1-4 pm August 12-16. Please arrive early on Monday to get your child or children registered.

How will you use your 168 hours this Fall?

Written by

Where has the summer gone? With the Stampede knocking at the door, with public schools calling on parents to register their kids, and the fair happening soon, it seems that we’ll be making a turn towards the Fall soon. Which means decision time is at hand. We all get 168 hours a week.  Nobody gets more, nobody gets less. How are you going to use your hours?  Have you ever thought about your week as a series of activities where you state your values and priorities by what you do? To cut to the chase, will God be a priority this Fall? Will God’s worship be an actual value? Will serving God be something that is a priority? Now is the time when there are all kinds of possible commitments starting to be pitched at you (including invitations from the church!). Will God’s worship be accomplished by saying yes to what is being offered? Will God be lifted up in your family by taking on that commitment or will that new commitment keep you and your family away from God? Theoretically everything we do can be done “unto the Lord” but as Americans many of us aren’t very intentional about making our work or our sports or our hunting for the Lord’s glory. So practically speaking, it’s very helpful to set aside hours that are specifically devoted to God. Joining clubs, sports, activities, boards, home improvement projects, taking more hours at work, etc. can all be positive and be good things, but by saying yes to participating in them, what are you saying no to? What are you giving up?  By saying yes to a new commitment are you still able to say “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?”  Here’s a tough question but needs to be asked: If Jesus and the things that matter to him are always on the bottom of the list, if Jesus and his mission never get a focus in our life, do we truly value Jesus and his calling? I’m praying for you as you enter into this next season of decision making regarding your time. You can’t do it all, I can’t do it all. Something is going to be cut from your schedule and for some people the Lord and his worship is what goes.  However, may the Lord Jesus know by your commitments and your use of our time, that you value him above all things. Please sit down before too long and determine what is the Lord’s and what part of your schedule is going to be devoted to him. Perhaps start by reviewing last year. What had you overwhelmed?  Did you get enough sleep?  Did your family get enough time with you?  Were things like Community Groups, Worship Services, Personal Devotions part of your life, or did they always get pushed aside?  Did you use your Spiritual Gift(s) in a meaningful way? Did you serve the Lord at all last year?  Asking these kinds of questions allow us to determine what is most valuable and how best to use the 168 hours per week we have been given. May everyone know by our commitments what we value the most.

SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

Earlier this summer both Becky McGee (Lily Pad Director) and Chris Ann Zook (Kidsplash Director) decided the timing was right to step away from their children’s ministry director roles. They both served faithfully for many years and will be missed! So what’s the plan?  What’s next for our Sunday morning children’s ministry at Living Water?  Here’s what’s happening:

-      Starting in August we’ll be taking our customary end of summer break.

Please plan on joining us for a meal after the 2nd worship service and then staying for the meeting.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN THE WORD starts September 18

Pastor Jeron will be teaching on Wednesday nights starting September 11. The class will run from 6:30-8:00 pm. This Fall’s study is going to focus on God’s plan for the world as revealed by the Bible. Does your view of the world match up with what God has revealed?

Perspective

Written by

Perhaps brothers and sisters you need to look at this life differently than you currently are?  In our troubles and adversities (or even in our victories) we can easily lose perspective on the bigger picture. If you are suffering today or overwhelmed by the weight of this world or feel defeated because of sin, remember that God has written us into a bigger story!  The chapter that you are experiencing today isn’t the end of the book.  Some “perspective” scriptures that remind us of the amazing future which is ours in Christ:

“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).

“Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world… do you not know that we are to judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3).

“Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2nd Timothy 4:8).

“Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” (1 Peter 5:10).

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2nd Corinthians 4:16-18).

Here’s some of what’s happening in the weeks ahead at Living Water…

COMMUNITY GROUP LEADERS TRAINING Tonight

Pastor Bo is leading another training tonight for the Fall launch of Community Groups. Join the team at 6:30 tonight in the Fellowship Hall. One of the neat ways you can serve your church family and participate in the making of disciples is through hosting or leading a Community Group in your home. Contact Pastor Bo if you would like to talk more about serving in this way (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

THIS SUNDAY

-      We’ll continue our sermon series through Exodus by focusing on the importance of the Lord’s presence in our lives and ministries. We’re in chapter 33 this week if you want to do some study ahead of the sermon. Worship services are 9:00 and 10:45 am.

-      Living Water is supporting a new College Outreach Ministry this Fall.  “Anchored” is kicking off soon and the leaders are going to introduce themselves and their ministry to us during the services.

-      Lily Pad and Kidsplash are back on this Sunday and will continue their summer program the rest of July.  We’re going to take August off and have our Fall Launch September 8th.  More information to come on a new program!

ICE CREAM SOCIAL THIS SUNDAY

As a way of introducing the new college ministry emphasis and connecting with folks who might be interested in serving, there will be ice cream served after the 2nd service this Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.

Faithful

Written by

God gave me a great reminder this week that he is at work and that he is to be trusted.  Some of you know that Elizabeth and I are selling our house out in the country and are seeking to move into Alamosa.  If you know Alamosa right now, you know that housing is in short supply.  So while we are happy that our house has a contract (if all goes well we’ll close on July 17) I have also been a bit nervous because of the shortage of availability of places to rent.  If you are connected to our church’s Facebook group you saw that I put out a request asking that if anyone knew of someone who had a house that was opening up, that we were interested. What I didn’t know, was that before I had even posted the request, someone had hours beforehand called the church and left a message asking me to get ahold of them – because they have a house that is now going to be vacant and they wanted to know if we had found anything yet.  Wow!  Didn’t see that one coming!  God answered my request before I even asked it!  And it came about because God has answered some prayers on the homeowner’s end of things which they were fervently praying about.  It certainly has been a great reminder that God is active in his providences, and that I need to trust him with my days.

Our church is going through some really exciting times right now, but we are also entering into a great amount of change (see all the updates below).  Guess what?  We need to trust him with our days!  We need to trust him to lead our church (HIS church)!  Let us remember in these days of change that God is faithful, and that he is at work, even when he hasn’t told us the timetable or revealed his plan.  Let us pray much about the decisions we have to make!  “What do you want us to do Lord?  Our eyes are on you!” Let us surrender ourselves to his perfect plan and his perfect timing and be at peace about the days ahead.  It’s a great time to

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

BAPTISMS this Sunday

If you’ve been planning to get baptized our next Baptism Sunday is this Sunday, June 23. The river is too high still so we’ll have baptisms in the church. Please contact Pastor Jeron (before Friday) if you want to talk about getting baptized (589-6351 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

EAGLE LAKE CAMP UPDATE

There are 39 registered and 10 pending so that puts us right at about 50 kids for our July 31-Aug 2 Day Camp. This is good but let’s go to work to sign more kids up!  There are so many children in our valley who haven’t heard the gospel!  Please let parents know about the camp and that they can register at www.eaglelakecamps.com/livingwater. If you would like to host some counselors this year we have 12 more people needing a host home. We are looking for some 13-18 year olds to serve as “crew campers” during the week.  Additionally if you would like to support a camper with scholarship money it is always welcomed!  Contact Jordan Curtis at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have questions or want to volunteer or help in any way.  Thank you!

COLLEGE MINISTRY UPDATE

I’m very happy to announce that Living Water will be supporting a new College Ministry this Fall. “ANCHORED” will be led by Forrest and Hope McCleary and Malcom and Leah Hillewaerts. They are moving here as missionaries specifically to reach students, staff and faculty!  Sometime in early August I’ll have them share during the worship services how we as a church can support them and on August 25th we’ll be hosting our first college meal of the Fall. Please be in prayer for the McClearys and the Hillewaerts and for the ASU and TSJC campuses.  Please welcome them into our church family!  This email address is being protected from spambots. NURSERY UPDATE

Over the years I’ve been so grateful for the folks who have led our nursery. Recently Anna Gearhart let us know it was time for her to step away. We’re going to have a time of saying thanks for her ministry on July 28th.  Having experienced and skilled leaders step away is always hard, but God continues to provide folks to take the baton. I’m happy to announce that our Nursery is in trusted hands. Melissa Shipp has agreed to be our new Nursery Director. She’s served in the nursery for many years and she is very excited about the opportunity to continue running our nursery at a high level. Harley Kincannon is going to be joining her in a leadership role as our Assistant Nursery Director. Church, let’s support these ladies, as our nursery is in high demand! If you’ve wanted to serve in the nursery, now is the time to volunteer!

PRAISE TEAM UPDATE

We’ve been blessed to have a bunch of folks step up and serve on the Praise Team in June, which has been an answer to prayer. John Gutierrez has done a great job helping our team as we lost Pastor Collin at the end of May (he took a lead pastor role at a church in Roswell, NM).  This Sunday some of the “new” folks to our church family will lead - Peter and Amanda Strutton have lived in Alamosa for about 9 months and have recently connected with the Praise Team.  On July 30th we go “old school” with Greg Bervig leading the team (will we hear a bluegrass sound?). Greg and Cindy led worship for several years at our Main Street building.  In the near future we are going to start a search for a new Praise Team director; I’m going to begin working on a job description soon.  Please pray for God to lead the right person to us as it takes a special person to be a full time Worship Leader!

BUILDING UPDATE

If you haven’t heard, our congregation has decided to move forward on the expanding our facilities through the construction of a Christian Education Community Building. Through the summer there will be a lot of planning and details lined up and we’ll be giving you regular communication.  In June and July Pastor Greg and the Facility and Finance Team will be filing loan application documents and making sure we are ready to go on that side of things. Starting in the August/September time frame we’ll launch a Building Fund Campaign. Our current timeline is to see groundbreaking by summer of 2020.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE

Parents, our Children’s Ministry is also in a time of change. If you read the Update email from last week you know that Becky McGee and ChrisAnn Zook are making the decision this summer to step away from leading Lily Pad and Kidsplash (they will serve through the end of July). This is going to be challenging as they’ve been serving our children for a long time, but we’re going to have a time of saying thanks for their ministries on July 28th.  Calendar wise, there won’t be Children’s Ministry Sunday, July 7th nor will we be offering Children’s Ministry for Sundays in August. Pastor Bo (Discipleship Director), Pastor Greg and I had a good planning session this week and are excited about what God is doing in our midst and about the opportunities ahead. While it’s hard to lose the services of leaders like Becky and ChrisAnn, it’s a great time to come to God in prayer and ask him what’s next and how we can best serve children and families.

HYMN SING June 30

We are excited that our monthly Hymn Sing is back on track with lots of musicians participating!  We’ve got a good one planned for Sunday, June 30th at 6:00 pm.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

We are offering an end of summer VBS at Living Water “On the Mountain High and in the Valley Low” program taking place August 12-16 from 1-4 pm each day.  Cana Myers is leading our team this year and would love to have you volunteer to serve the kids by leading Bible story time, games, check in/out, snacks, crafts, lifeguards or music. You can email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or the church office at This email address is being protected from spambots. GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

August 8-9 here at Living Water. This is an event that can help you in your leadership. The GLS is also a way that you can outreach to the community by helping community members get training on their leadership in their businesses and organizations. As a part of Living Water you have very reduced rates (use the code GLS19TEAM) when you register athttps://globalleadership.org/global-leadership-summit/

MISSIONS NEWS

-      Guatemala Mission Trip. A group from our church is heading to Guatemala soon and would like to bring some baby supplies – there is a box in the outer lobby if you want to donate Formula (0-12 months), baby wipes, and diapers sizes 3 & 4. Contact Eric Palmer at 970-219-8833 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

-      Jim and Jerry Casey serving in Alaska.  Our sunrise today was at 4:19 am and sunset tonight will be at 11:40 pm. Our days are definitely long right now and even after sunset, twilight makes it very easy to see and I wouldn’t call it dark outside! The longest day is this week and then we slowly start heading the other direction again….. the pattern of life and seasons. Jerry has been busy flying every day from 7 am to 5 pm with the three high school students, they are getting some good hours in with the good weather. They did a cross country last week to Kenai and Homer and this week they will do a cross country to Talkeetna and Fairbanks. He has three more days this week and then two days next week and then the program ends for him. Next Wednesday there is a graduation from the program picnic we will attend.  Should be fun! Pray for these kids as they make life choices!  My health has had a roller coaster ride the last week but I am coming out on top now….. The anti-fungal lozenges made me sick with flu like symptoms for about three days but that is much better now and my tongue has improved. Still coughing the same, but I seem to have more energy again, which is a nice change. Some symptoms are gone, others linger but overall I am seeing improvement, especially in the last few days. I wonder sometimes if getting worse makes me appreciate the baseline symptoms I have learned to live with? Random thought…..Please continue to pray for my health and for us to see steady improvement. We have a few people come and go with hospitality the last week and this week and the fellowship has been good and we hope they have found this place peaceful and restful. God seems to be sending just the right balance of guests this summer to our home. Not overwhelming but a nice coming and going of people to share with and learn how God is working in their lives. This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Aileen Fitzpatrick returned from North Africa about four months ago and has for now completed her missionary service in that regionI wanted to let you all know that I will be in Alamosa July 9-23 (she’ll be sharing some of her story at our July 14 worship services).  I'll be staying over on 7th street in town, and I'd love to see as many people as possible. I'm flying into and out of Alamosa. I don't have any specific plans as of yet. I am in town to see partners and friends.  I want to make sure that I get face to face time with as many people as possible.  Just wanted to let you know, so we can start making plans.  Let me know if you are planning to be in town during that time, and if you want to set a time to meet already. This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Jeremy and Beth Schmidt serving in North Africa. The Schmidts are planning to be with us at Living Water August 11th.  If you want to contact Jeremy or Beth please let John Clark know as for security reasons they are very guarded in their communications.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Wendell and Heather Garrison serving in British Columbia.  The Garrisons recently celebrated the lodge passing a major inspection and had a Grand Opening on May 25th.  It’s been a long term dream (and labor of love) to be able to host campers at Rock Nest Ranch on a year round basis so this is a major celebration.  Pray for their summer program which is in full swing.  I don’t know if they are still looking for more summer staff or not.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Dan and Melinda Nelson serving Latin America. Dan is currently looking for someone to be the Initiative Leader for the Bajio region (6 states) in central Mexico.  This person would coordinate efforts with existing churches and missionaries.  This is the “least reached” part of Mexico, having proved itself to be more resistant to the gospel than other parts of the country.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Chris and Faith Creech serving pastors and churches in America and AsiaChris and Faith have been traveling in Asia on a teaching tour.  Faith’s health for several months was very poor.  They found a doctor that helped them while traveling and the last I heard she was feeling much better.  Please continue to pray for energy and health for Chris and Faith.  This email address is being protected from spambots. -      Brad and Gina Shaw serving in Peru.  Brad and Gina are currently on home assignment. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

-      Taylor and Kay Barton have completed their Navigators Ministry in Colorado Springs.  They are now living in Wyoming.  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

-      Deric and Rebecca Sneller serving our military in Japan.  Today (June 13) we received word that our van would not be able to pass the Japanese Inspection. All repairs aligned with being a vehicle of almost 20 years old. Ball-joints, brakes, and countless other things made it not even worth creating a repair quote and made the decision to replace clear. Okinawa heat, humidity, and typhoons is hard on vehicles and I have seen many vans of the same make, model, and year find the same fate. Thankfully we have teammate's vehicle we can use as long as we need until we find a good replacement. Also, the road tax fees will be refunded to us. Please pray for a replacement that will serve us well the remainder of our time in Oki (5 years). If you would like to give toward a toward a replacement, that would be welcome as well. This email address is being protected from spambots.
